Another Reason to Take your Foot Care Seriously…

I recently came across this news story, about an anchorman in Ireland who learned  the dangers of ignoring foot problems the hard way. Political broadcaster, Ken Reid, developed type 2 diabetes and ignored his foot problems for so long he almost had to have his foot amputated (in the end doctors were able to save all but one toe from amputation).  Reid was later diagnosed with leukaemia after a simple check-up with his podiatrist after noticing a nick on his foot. This led to an early diagnosis and a good prognosis for recovery.  The take away? Pay attention to your foot health and  if you have any concerns at all, visit your podiatrist. If you have any concerns at, please feel free to contact us.

New Study: Seniors Who See Podiatrists Reduce their Risk of Falls

Falls are the most common cause of injury among older Canadians and every year, 1 in 3 seniors aged 65 years and older are likely to fall at least once. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, over one-third of seniors who are hospitalized as a result of a fall are placed in long-term care. Other consequences of falls later in life include hospitalizations, reduced quality of life, chronic pain, injuries such as hip fractures, and increased risk of death.

According to a recent study, published by Age and Ageing, taking better care of your feet can significantly reduce seniors’ risk of falling. According to the study, which was a systematic review and meta-analysis involving over 6,500 participants, “multifaceted podiatry interventions included routine podiatry, patient education, footwear and/or orthotics if required and foot and ankle at-home exercises” were associated with a significant decrease in the rate of falls in community-based senior citizens.

If you’d like to learn more about how Vancouver Podiatry can help you improve your foot health and keep you happily and healthily on your feet, please feel free to book a consultation with our Vancouver Podiatrists, Dr. Roy Mathews, DPM or Dr. Victor Quintoro, DPM.
